Setting up the hemodialysis machine, connecting the dialyzer and tubing to the machine, and putting the machine together for use are common responsibilities for a dialysis technician. After priming the dialyzer with saline or heparinized solution, the technician mixes the dialysate (a complex organic acid). Before the patient is taken to the dialysis room and sat on the lounge chair next to it, the hemodialysis machine is correctly set up. Before beginning treatment, the patient's pre-dialysis weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration rate are monitored. To ease any anxieties, the patient is also given a full explanation of the hemodialysis procedure.
